Self-Employment Goals

February 14, 2012 Lifestyle

Work From Home FamilyNow that I have quit my job and have actually begun my journey towards self-employment I thought it would be important to think of what I would like to accomplish. Unlike other entrepreneurs I don’t have dreams of hitting the jackpot and retiring. I also don’t have dreams of only working 4 hours a week and living on passive income. Those things would definitely be nice but they aren’t realistic goals.

Earn A Reasonable Income

Unfortunately, everything comes down to money. No matter how frugal a person is they will still depend on money to some extent, I’m definitely not the exception. I am happily married and my wife loves her job as a teacher. She makes a decent amount of money but for the time being we will still be in the red every month. My most important goal in my journey is to make enough money where we are able to pay our bills/mortgage and a little extra for emergencies. If I don’t accomplish this then its just a matter of time before I must do contract work or even go back to a 9-5 corp job. I am very fortunate to have a wife that supports this dream of mine. Unfortunately, if our savings runs out then I have no choice but to put the dream on the back burner.

Travel

Once I earn a livable income I would absolutely love to travel with my wife. Since she is a teacher she has several periods of the year where we could travel somewhere else. I would be able to bring my laptop with and work as needed. Maybe we could rent a house in Mexico for a month, travel throughout Europe for a summer, or Ski in Colorado every winter. The possibilities are endless. Those things require money, but staying with a friend in another city for a little while could still be cheap. I have stayed in one place for too long in my life. We only live once so why not make the most of it.

Live A Healthy Life

It has been very difficult to consistently work out while working the 9-5 job. At the end of the day I would feel like I just finished my own workout. During the rare occasions that I would build up the motivation to actually work out the club would be absolutely packed with all the other 9-5ers. The other option was going late at night when there isn’t as much traffic. At night it’s difficult to plan time for dinner, go workout, shower, and somehow find time to hang out with my wife. Now that I have complete control over my time I want to find time for working out. I have no fantasies of becoming a ripped body builder. I just want to consistently work out a few times a week and gain a healthier body.

Raise Children Without Daycare

Right now I don’t have any kids. I probably won’t have any kids for another few years. A big reason why I attempting to work for myself right now is because I only have a few years before kids come into the picture. I need to figure out where my career is going by that time. I either need to have a sustainable income through self-employment or I need to find a stable job that can provide that. If I am successful in working for myself I would love for our family to be able to raise our kids on our own. We aren’t lucky enough to have a family member that can dedicate their days to watching our children. Our options are basically keeping someone at home or sending them to a daycare. There is nothing wrong with daycares, but my preference would be to watch the kids while my wife is working and work when I can. Gaining a passive income stream is very important for this.
